Quincy 390 Compressor 1

UpUp

For sale is a Quincy model 390, Revision 15 reciprocating compressor. Serial number 468216 8. This compressor has a three phase, 220v/440v motor presently wired for 220v. The pump is capable of 79 CFM at 175 PSI, depending on its speed. The tank is a 120 gallon tank, rated at 200 PSI at 650 degrees F. The nameplate on the motor is not readable, bt according to pulley size and Cochrane compressor, the motor has to be 20 HP.

This compressor has a QR-25 model 390 pump, which is still manufactured by Quincy and has many parts available, from Quincy and aftermarket. See PDF brochure included below. It was sold by Cochrane Compressor Company, which is still in business. I am their customer for my personal projects.

I tested this compressor. Unfortunately, my 17.5 HP phase converter could not spin it up beyond approximately one revolution per second, but it did spin and did make the right sounds. This compressor is dirty.

Quincy QR-25 family of pumps is Quincy's flagship product. These pumps are known to work essentially forever, due to pressure lubrication and hydraulic/pneumatic unloaders. These unloaders make sure that the compressor starts pumping air only when it comes up to full oil pressure. This saves you in case if you lose oil, as well as makes for easier starts. Commercial customers who are billed for peak amps will certainly love this feature. My own Quincy 340 compressor was made in 1951 and serves me every day in my shop. The rubber unloader diaphragms (part 1855), you need to replace maybe every 20 years.

It served a small but proud American shop faithfully until it closed due to the financial collapse of 2008. It was taken out of service and I bought it at an auction.

While I have tested the basic function of this compressor, many fine points remain untested and are as is. The only thing that I guarantee is that the motor runs and the compressor pumps air. I also give no guarantees about the tank, which you would be wise to hydrotest. But the tank is made of very thick steel, 0.193" as you can see on the tank. I am not aware of any adverse information about this compressor.

While I am not aware of any problems with this compressor, I want to point out that overhaul and tuneup kits are available for this model, from Quincy or ecompressedair.com. See this item and this item.

Pickup and shipping. This compressor is on my truck. Local pickup is free. We can winch it from my truck to yours. I am not able to lift it off my truck and I do not own a forklift. I can deliver within Chicagoland for $2.50 per loaded mile. You will need means to unload it (such as a forklift or a wrecker crane). I can also ship it, with the shipping rate determined by the shipping calculator.
